Saturday night at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park, located in St. Louis, MO, Fight Night Promotions in association with Don King Productions brought professional boxing (along with four amateur bouts) back to St. Louis on a card called “Boxing in the Park.” With referee Steve Smoger handling the majority of the bouts, this was the first live boxing event in Forrest Park since 1904, which was part of the World’s Fair. The 1904 World’s Fair held the first live boxing event in Forrest Park, and it was also the introduction of the ice cream cone. Several of the fighters on the card were trained and managed by Sweat/Pound4Pound (www.sweatp4p.com), who helped put on the show.

Cruiserweight Ryan Coyne (16-0, 6 KOs) of St. Louis scored a 2nd round knockout over Shane Steele (7-3, 5 KOs) of Louisville, KY.

Junior welterweight Tyrone Chatman (6-1, 5 KOs) of St. Louis won a unanimous over Dedrick Bell (4-3, 3 KOs) of Memphis, TN.

Cruiserweight Nick Reeder (1-0, 1 KO) of St. Louis, MO scored a 2nd round knockout over Kevin Jones (1-2, 1 KO) of St. Louis, MO.

Junior welterweight Keandre Gibson (1-0) of St. Louis, MO won a unanimous decision over Jamar Hampton (1-4, 1 KO) of St. Louis, MO.

Weltwerweights Troy White (0-0-1) and Jeffrey Combs (0-1-1), both of St. Louis, MO, fought to a draw.

Rafael’s remark: St. Louis prospect Coyne, who participated in the final edition of “The Contender” reality series, was coming off a highlight-reel ninth-round knockout of Warren Browning in August in Coyne’s hometown. Back in St. Louis again, Coyne, 28, a former Missouri linebacker, worked Steele over like a heavy bag. He landed a variety of punches in the second round before scoring another highlight-reel knockout. Coyne pounded Steele to the body, clipped him with a right uppercut and cracked him with left hands to send Steele, of Louisville, Ky., falling facefirst in a heap by the ropes. Referee Steve Smoger immediately — and appropriately — called off the fight. It was an easy night for Coyne, who, according to business advisor Mike Garrett, will return on the undercard of the expected Devon Alexander-Timothy Bradley Jr. welterweight championship fight on Jan. 29.

Fight fans were in for a treat Wednesday May 12th at Chaifetz Arena as colorful boxing promoter Don King announced the June 12th ring return of one boxing’s hottest rising stars and St. Louis’ own Ryan ‘The Irish Outlaw’ Coyne. Ryan will be featured in the 10 round co feature of the world title fight with Five-time world champion and current International Boxing Federation junior middleweight champion Cory “The Next Generation” Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) who takes on IBF No. 1-ranked mandatory challenger Cornelius “K9″ Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs).

Ryan addressed those in attendance I love fighting in my hometown, especially with heroes of mine like Cory Spinks. I fought in the first boxing match at Chaifetz Arena, and now I’ll be fighting as part of the first world championship card at the arena. I look forward to showing everyone that I am a force to be reckoned with in the cruiserweight division. I was on the recent card where Devon Alexander defeated Juan Urango to become a unified world champion. I love that. I am all about St. Louis and being part of the fight scene here. I’m still undefeated and soon I am going to get the chance to prove I am worthy of being in my own world championship match.”

Ryan’s opponent will be announce in short order as he looks to move 15-0 and solidify himself in the world rankings. With powerhouse promoter Don King firmly committed to promoting the former Contender star Coyne, a world title shot could loom just around the corner.

Ryan Coyne is going to be back in the ring next Saturday March 6th on the undercard of Devon Alexander’s world title unification bout at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. The card is being broadcast by HBO with Devon headlining the show in which he will put his WBC Junior Welterweight title on the line against fellow IBF Junior Welterweight champion Juan Urango. Ryan ‘The Irish Outlaw’ Coyne was deep into training camp for a bout on March 19th when he got the call from Don King Productions that he was being moved to theundercard of a higher profile HBO world title bout featuring stablemate and fellow St. Louisan Devon ‘The Great’ Alexander. The change in date and venue was a bit of a curveball for the undefeated cruiserweight prospect, but as he said, ” I live in the gym. My life revolves around getting a phone call like this. I was euphoric, ecstatic. I would have taken the fight if it was the next day!” Ryan puts his undeafeted record on the line against Paul Jennette a power punching veteran from North Carolina who boasts a record of 11-2. The action all takes place next Saturday March 6th at the lush Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT with the main event broadcast on HBO Boxing After Dark.
